A graduate of the Australian Orthopaedic Association training program, with subsequent international fellowships in the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States.
Leadership Roles
Director of the Melbourne Orthopaedic Group Research Foundation’s program in hip and knee replacement surgery. This program supervises international orthopaedic surgeons from the United States, United Kingdom, Europe, South America, and the Middle East. It has produced internationally recognised research in areas such as hip resurfacing, the spinopelvic relationship and its relevance to hip replacement, and alignment strategies in knee arthroplasty.
Current Research Activities
- Investigating the relationship between alignment strategies and patient outcomes following total knee replacement.
- Modernising the classification of spinopelvic risk factors to optimise preoperative planning for total hip replacement.
- Conducting long-term follow-up studies on hip resurfacing surgery.
- Reviewing outcomes of high-offset acetabular liners when used to achieve optimal biomechanical reconstruction in total hip replacement.
Publications and Citations
The program has generated a significant body of peer-reviewed publications, with a personal citation record of h-index 27 and i10-index 37.
Professional Recognitions and Contributions
- Elected member of the International Hip Society, an invitation-only group of 100 hip surgeons worldwide, nominated by peers based on research excellence and clinical contribution.
- Co-convenor for 20 years of the international orthopaedic meeting *The Great Debate*, held in collaboration with Imperial College London.
- Past President of the Arthroplasty Society of Australia, representing leading surgeons in hip and knee replacement.
- Member of the Australian Knee Society.
- Invited instructional course lecturer at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
- Howard Hatcher Visiting Professor at Stanford University (2014), delivering the Founders Day and Disputation Day keynote addresses.
- Implant design contributor to some of the most widely used and successful hip and knee replacement systems in Australia over the past decade.
- Developer of surgical planning software, designed to assist surgeons with hip and knee replacement procedures.
- Past Chairman of the Orthopaedic Subcommittee and member of the Advisory Committee on Medical Devices (ACMD) for the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), an appointment of the Australian Department of Health.
Personal Interests
Outside of orthopaedics, he is an enthusiastic (and self-described “tragic”) golfer, occasionally exasperating — friends and colleagues with his many, usually unsuccessful, theories on the mechanics of the golf swing.

Specialties & Services
A/Prof. Andrew Shimmin specialises in the treatment and surgical management of hip and knee problems caused by arthritis and sporting injuries. This includes special expertise in hip replacement and resurfacing and patient-specific image guided total knee replacements. A/Prof. Shimmin has performed over 1000 Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstructions and over 5000 surgeries for meniscal (cartliage) injuries to the knee. He has recently involved in the research of stem cell treatment, which use allogenic stem cells for the prevention of osteoarthritis in the human knee. Total Hip Replacement
A/Prof. Shimmin is an experienced hip replacement surgeon. He is trained in and regularly uses all surgical approaches, all methods of implant fixation (cement and cementless titanium) and all bearing surfaces (metals, polyethylenes and ceramics).
Hip Resurfacing
Some patients with osteoarthritis of the hip would be considered for hip resurfacing surgery. Mr Shimmin has extensive experience and research interest in choosing the optimum implant types for each patient.
Knee
A/Prof. Shimmin regularly performs total knee replacements often with the aid of image guided patient specific navigation techniques. He will also consider unicompartment or half-knee replacements for specific indications.
